Privacy
settled is a joke about money, not a business built on knowing who you are. There are no accounts, no passwords, no cookies, and no third-party trackers. This page says exactly what is collected, why, who else touches it, and how to get rid of it.
Who we are
settled.wtf is operated by PaperCloud Studios, and we are the entity responsible for the information described here. You can reach us using the form at the bottom of this page. Australian privacy law applies to us, and this policy is written to meet the Australian Privacy Principles.
The short version
We keep the money side of a payment, your email address so we can tell you when you have been overtaken, and a display name if you chose to give one. That is the lot. Nothing is sold, nothing is shared for marketing, and there is no profile of you anywhere in this system.
What we collect
Payments. For each one: the amount, which side of which argument, the time, and the payment reference from Stripe. We never see or store your card details. Stripe handles the card and only tells us that a payment succeeded.
Your email address. Stripe collects it to send your receipt, and passes it to us. We use it for exactly one thing: telling you when somebody spends more than you on an argument you paid to settle. There is no newsletter and no marketing. Every message carries a link that stops them permanently, and using it does not affect anything you have paid for.
A display name, if you give one. The name field is optional and sits under the money on any argument. If you fill it in, it is shown publicly next to what you spent. If you leave it blank, your payment is anonymous and stays that way.
Traffic counts. We record a page path and a date, and publish the totals at /analytics. No IP addresses, no cookies, no third-party analytics, and nothing in those counts can be traced back to a person or to a payment.
Anything you type into the contact form. Your message and the address you want a reply at, kept only as long as it takes to deal with what you wrote.
What your browser stores
Two things, both held on your own device and neither of them a cookie. A random tab identifier, kept only until you close the tab, used to count how many people are looking at the site at once and discarded within a minute of you leaving. And the display name you last typed, kept so you do not have to retype it, which you can remove by clearing your browser data. Neither is linked to your payments or your email address, and neither leaves your device except as part of an anonymous count.
What we do not do
We do not sell or rent your information. We do not run advertising, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics. We do not build a profile of you, and we have no way to link your browsing to your payments. We do not ask for your name, address, phone number or date of birth, and you should not send them to us.
Who else handles it
Running a website means other companies touch the data on our behalf. These are all of them:
- Stripe takes the payment and collects your card details and email under its own privacy policy.
- Vercel hosts the site and serves the pages.
- Neon runs the database the payment records sit in.
- Resend sends the one email described above.
- Formspree delivers messages sent through the contact form.
Each of these is used only to run the site, never to market to you. They operate internationally, so your information may be stored or processed outside Australia, including in the United States. By using settled you agree to that, and we choose providers that handle information to a standard consistent with Australian law.
How long we keep it
Payment records are kept while the site runs, because they are the scoreboard: the totals on every argument are added up from them, so deleting one would change a public number. Australian tax and financial record keeping rules also require us to retain transaction records, generally for five years.
Your email address is kept only while you are subscribed to overtaken notices, and is removed when you unsubscribe. Contact form messages are deleted once they are dealt with. Traffic counts are just numbers and are never tied to a person.
Getting your information, changing it, or removing it
Ask us and you can have a copy of what we hold about you, have it corrected if it is wrong, or have it removed. Practically, that means we can delete your email address and any display name you gave, and we will. We cannot delete the amount and side of a payment, for the reason above, but once the name and email are gone that record is not connected to you.
We do not charge for this and we do not need a reason. Use the form below.
Security
Everything is served over HTTPS, card details never reach our systems, and payments are only ever recorded from a signed message from Stripe rather than from anything your browser tells us. No system is perfectly secure, and we are not going to pretend otherwise, but there is very little here to steal.
Age
settled is not for children. You must be 18 or over to pay, and we do not knowingly collect information from anybody younger. If you believe a child has paid, tell us and we will refund it and delete what we hold.
Complaints
If you think we have mishandled your information, tell us first using the form below and we will look into it and write back. If you are not satisfied with how we handle it, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
If this policy changes, the version on this page is the one that applies. We will not quietly start collecting something new: any change to what is collected happens at the same time as a change to this page.
